The first research into agricultural weeds in Iran was conducted in 1940, and the first Persian book on weeds was published by Ainullah Behbodhi in 1960. The establishment of the Pest Research Institute in 1960 led to a more coherent approach to weed research in the country. The result has been the initiation of a variety of research types by other researchers. In the early 2000s, with the establishment of master's degrees in weed science in the country's universities, weed science education began in Iran, and in 2001, the Iranian Society of Weed Science (ISWS) was established by the pioneers of this science in the country. In 2001, with the publication of the scientific journal "Iranian Journal of Weed Science," the latest achievements of researchers and students were made available to all interested in the study of weeds. With the establishment of this society, educational and research activities related to weeds have become more structured. In 2005, the board of directors of this society convened an independent national conference (bi-annually). This resulted in the first Iranian Weed Science Conference being held at the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection (IRIPP) in 2005. As of today, the society has 150 continuous members from various universities and research centers throughout the country. As of now, the secretariat of the ISWS is located in the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, Tehran, Iran.
